Marble Empire is 21-year-old singer and producer Matt Berry from North London, who has just revealed a video for his new single ‘Head Above The Water’ featuring Katya DJ. Berry, a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, keys and drums) writes and produces all his own material, which he describes as a blend of, ‘gritty basslines, jazz harmony and guitar lines soaked in effects’.
Matt was approached by Katya DJ at one of his live shows and after chatting they decided to try and record a track together, ‘We kept talking and got her round the following week to do the track together. I did all the production myself and the lyrics and melody were a mix of both of our inputs. The guitar solo is Katya though!’
The video for ‘Head Above The Water’ has a dark and confusing message, featuring a girl waking up from a motorcycle crash over and over again, trying to make sense of what actually happened to her. ‘Myself and the directors discussed ways we could make this work as we wanted to create a really cool piece of film that was dramatic and added an intense side to the track. The multiple double gangers represent ‘perspectives’ this is relative to the song itself which is about trying your best to keep your head up when life is tough and always looking at things from different views and to be understanding. We intensified the message here as the film draws on a much darker theme, I wanted it to be a head scratcher!’
Matt also describes the wider meaning of ‘Head Above The Water’ as being about, ‘Trying to stay positive and carry on even if things are hard. I think it resounds well with every young person who is trying to plan their career path – especially in a competitive industry like the arts.’
Influenced by a range of artists including Ben Khan, Jungle, SG Lewis and Frank Ocean, tentative early single releases last year quickly gained him attention from BBC Introducing and his single TTSU saw Marble Empire being featured in BBC6 Music’s Top 30 for 2017 and on Spotify’s Fresh Finds.
