Enigmatic, self-proclaimed Afro-futurist, ALXNDR LONDON, is poised to release a brand new track with the arrival of ‘Talking Drum’, an emotive soul driven, leftfield electronic gem inspired by the West African drum famed for mimicking human speech, an almost hum-like sound. The song is prayer to the ancestors, pleading for forgiveness, asking if it is not too late to return to the Motherland.
Alxndr details the track: “The song is inspired by gospel songs. I would hum and sing along to the hymns and African Spirituals. Talking drum is my prayer. I pray that the waves will receive and guide the diaspora back home. I pray that it is not too late for change. I pray that these strange, foreign lands are a thing of yesterday. This song not only captures elements of classic soul music, I also have the liberty of exploring minimal electronica to create a prayer like chant, capturing the hallucinatory, euphoric, floating sensation of surrendering to the unknown, in this case water”.
Talking Drum has the makings of an African Spiritual of old complete with pronounced hums, clinking chains and simple thumping bass/kick drum patterns. Harmonies and choral notes evoke images of church, gospel and the blues.
The song is an invitation for listeners to embark on another chapter of voyage and self discover into unknown waters. The African drum known for its part in traditional storytelling tells the story of the African diaspora and their quest to return; like a group phone call home.
