Among Criminals is set to release their new EP Darker Sweetness this August 2019! A blend of 60’s Jamaican dub and Southern California reggae-punk, Darker Sweetness has an upbeat vibe juxtaposed to the dark subject matter it’s lyrics address. The paradox of the two concepts, sweetness and darkness, fits nicely into Among Criminals’repertoire of pushing the envelope both sonically and lyrically. Darker Sweetness will be available everywhere you stream music in August 2019.
Among Criminals threads together 1990’s alt-rock, modern indie rock, punk rock, and Jamaican dub, ska, and reggae. It’s an adventurous aesthetic that conjures the fearless musicality of the Mars Volta and At The Drive In, Nirvana, and Police and ties in a bit of SOJA, Pepper with Manchester Orchestra. Clash-esque Reggae Punk, a dab of South American rhythms, and a progressive sound independent of classification, wrapped in an extremely intense live show makes this band a force to be reckoned with.
Selling out shows at home such as the World Café Live, TLA, and Electric Factor. Among Criminals has toured across the USA, Europe, Iceland, and Central America, and have performed with legendary bands like Dirty Heads, SOJA, Fortunate Youth, Pepper and more. They have also been featured on Philly’s own WXPN, The River in Boston, and NBC 10’s 10!Show, and have been selected to showcase at NACA’s Northeast Conference.
The indie reggae punk trio lead by Ryan Gaughan has spent the last few years on the road developing their sound and style as well as amassing a cult following. Living out of his van in L.A. and moving back to Philly working seven days a week, Ryan put all of his time and energy into creating Darker Sweetness. Among Criminals came on to the scene back in 2012 with the release of their self-titled debut album. Their new release Darker Sweetness takes them sonically full circle.
Hard hitting tracks on the new EP include “60,000 Messages,” a track that was written, arranged and recorded in less than 2 hours. Crooning horns, calming vocals and honest lyrics “about a man who ends up building dependency on his stalker. Once she moves on, he becomes obsessed with bringing her back into his life,” says the band. Another bold song off the EP is “WAR,” a track written while George W Bush was in office, reminds listeners that the destruction of international war “never settles the score.” “If You Don’t Die Too Soon” is a song about a fighting couples last breaths together, and “Say So” is the viewpoint of a wrongly accused black man sentenced to death row.
Darker Sweetness will drop in August 2019, and Among Criminals will hit the road in support of the new release this fall. The band will tour through the US and Europe, so be sure to keep your ear to the ground to see their wild live show in a city near you! You can track their upcoming tour dates here, and be sure to look out for their new EP out this August!
