Barny Fletcher has dropped ‘Blu Skyes’, the second taste from his forthcoming debut mixtape following the irrepressible introductory track, ‘Christ Flow’
With early support across Radio 1 and 6Music, Barny has also confirmed details of his first ever live shows, which will take in the likes of Live at Leeds, The Great Escape, Benicassim and Lollapalooza Paris. More shows and news on Fletcher’s first mixtape will follow soon.
‘Blu Skyes’ was tailor-made for those moments when life is in fact anything but. Mixing hazy hip-hop, smooth R&B and Fletcher’s restless, rapid delivery, the track – says Barny – “is about being broke as fuck, but still spending all your money regardless. It’s an ode to the finer things in life. Like going on holiday. Free alcohol. Moving on from your ex-girlfriend.” Produced by Cadenza (M.I.A, Jorja Smith, Flohio), here is another compelling glimpse of an artist whose humour, occasional eccentricity and boundless positivity feels like a genuine breath of fresh air, and leaves ‘Blu Skyes’ in its wake.
Barny Fletcher grew up in the unlikely setting of future-stardom, a small Somerset village, to a photographer father, filmmaker mother…and very little else to occupy his hyperactive nature. As he hit his teens, Barny listened to anything and everything, an approach that might explain his eclectic, genre-mashing style: his early record collection ranged from the storytelling of Rodriguez and the skits of old-school Eminem to avant-garde humourists Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Aged just 21 years old and already working on new music with the likes of DJ Shadow, Ratboy, and Paul White, Barny began the year with a bang on ‘Christ Flow’ – a bombastic and brilliantly chaotic window into his debut project, with lyrics that appear as knowingly surreal as they are tender and affectionate.
