Brevner – IKIGAI (Prelude) – Mono No Aware | @MattBrevner |

At a time when audiences are craving increasingly personal and authentic
interactions, West Coast conceptual recording artist Brevner readies his most
impactful and emotionally provocative work yet.The prelude for the forthcoming
video/documentary “IKIGAI” series – “MONO NO AWARE” is a piece that strips away
the confines of the music industry, and the artist’s very own mind.

Self-produced and recorded in only 24 hours, Brevner captures the fundamental and
simplistic truths of the creative process through tasteful minimalism. A process that
originally started out as an experiment of self-exploration and pursuit of purpose, has
since turned into a new way of life for the rapper. Ikigai is a Japanese concept that
translates to “a reason for being.” The word “ikigai” is usually used to indicate the
source of value in one’s life or the things that make one’s life worthwhile.

Mono no aware (物の哀れ), literally “the pathos of things”, and also translated as “an
empathy toward things”, or “a sensitivity to ephemera”, is a Japanese term for the
awareness of impermanence. The intention of the video is to capture this emotional
realization visually though the lens of a tumultuous relationship ( as the song
depicts ). Mono no aware is the first video in a series of telling acts set to be
released in 2019, and showcase Brevner’s refreshing approach to lyrical storytelling.
Inspired by Paul Simon and Kanye West, Brevner remains the West Coast’s most
prolific and historically unwavering voice. His unapologetic “gangster-folk” sound is
raw and compelling, emotionally challenging his fans to embrace their most
authentic selves.

Growing up in Vancouver of Japanese and Trinidadian descent, the Canadian rapper
stands out from his peers with his elevated artistic taste and brash, yet honest, lyrical
analysis. Riddled with double entendres and an underlying theme of duality, his music
carries longevity that transcends genres.

hese combined traits have helped propel him to recognized heights in the Canadian
music industry and beyond – including record-breaking streaming numbers and both
Juno and MuchMusic Video award nominations.
