Gothenburg producer Donnie Castle has released new full lengthrecord Donnie II. This follows 2018’s mixtape and trilogy of singles Oooh which received critical praise, a top 10 on Hype Machine, and inclusion in Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Flume’s ‘Essentials’ playlist.
The album’s first single ‘Wish You Well’ was about Donnie’s breakdown with ex over her stripping career and earned the title “chugging synth banger” from The Line Of Best Fit, while its follow up ‘Alprazolamia’ is a blurry, spaced out exploration of a struggle with addiction.
The record includes collaborations with Insidiox, Nørd, JuOnTheBeat as well as Sheffield’s own Kidd Jinxed on frenetic rap track ‘Red Dress’. This came about through a chance digital encounter:
Donnie tells us “I found young Kidd Jinxed on an app where he sat and rapped in his headset to instrumentals. I reached out and thought he was very talented and soon he started to message me for beats. We talked back and forth and soon it turned out that he could relate to the same kind of heartbreak. 10 Years younger than me, damn. I asked if he wanted to jump on my album and we created this song is about ‘the devil in the red dress.
Having fallen into the escapism of underground clubs, self-destruction and an attachment to LSD following a break-up in 2015, Donnie has come out the other side of the wormhole and is in a more reflective space on his new record.
Donnie II is available everywhere March 20th via Something Beautiful.
