The Puerto Rican singer Elysanij has a privileged voice, a refreshing image and a talent for composing melodies which have led her to taste success in such a short time in the competitive urban genre. All these reasons amount Elysanij to be considered a musical phenomenon.
The release of her first album, “Believed”, has been incredibly received that it soared to # 1 hits in iTunes sales under the category “Top Latin Albums. It also debuted among the TOP 5 in the list of “Latin Album Sales” from the prestigious Billboard magazine.
“Rota”, the theme in promotion, is a composition from the world-wide famous Wise The Gold Pen. Elysanij’s album is a six-track EP produced in just three weeks with his management team, Heroes Music label with its president the well-known merengue singer, Juan Luis Juancho and Red Allies Media / Music with its president Omar Rodríguez. “Believed” is an album mostly composed by the singer-songwriter.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Elysanij began to sing together with her family. A regular outing to a restaurant, it became a kind of small concert for Elysanij. From the age of 14, Elysanij would seize the microphone and would delight in the thrill of singing karaoke.
For Elysanij her role model and inspiration is her father; the well-known merenguero of the 90’s, Maldo, who taught her how to play the guitar. Elysanij learned to play guitar by ear. In addition, the singer explains that her favorite musical genre is the blues and her favorite singer is the Salvadoran Álvaro Torres.
Now; where does the name Elysanij come from? This singer’s name is actually Janielys Maldonado and her artistic nickname is an anagram of her first name.
During her childhood, which she describes as very happy, Elysanij enjoyed being surrounded by her family and music; both things went hand in hand. A family reunion always ended with music, because her mother and sister also sing. The support of her family has been crucial for the development of her career. “[I had my family with me, supporting me in the things that I
thought I could achieve at the age I was in. My childhood was the best, because I was surrounded by the most lovable family and music, that was the way we’d come together]”, says the artist.
Feeling and soul is key in the compositions of Elysanij, for that reason the first theme she wrote about was a bachata titled “Today”. The interesting thing about the lyrics is that it reflects the nostalgia and pain felt by a friend who was suffering from a very uncomfortable situation in her relationship. Elysanij was able to convey another’s feeling as if it were personal. That is one of her great talents as a composer; feel the stories of others to present them with force and passion.
These strong interpretations led her to obtain the first place in a youth Talent Show held in the prestigious Center of Fine Arts of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico in 2013. Elysanij represented her school Josefina Barceló in the singing category and this experience served as the basis for her to mastering the stage as she does today. “[I won first place, which was a beautiful experience because I understood that I was presenting in another larger category and for me it was a challenge to explore being on a platform and see if my nerves betrayed me or not]”, says the singer.
Elysanij, who used to work as an orthopedic operating room technician, is a tireless worker. The new challenges that this race entails as an exponent of the competitive urban genre, Elysanij perceives them as a way to evolve. Even in a genre where women are now steadily making their way, Elysanij has qualities that have helped her in her rapid rise, since she is a perfectionist, responsible and very professional. In addition, the singer admits that she has had a growth not only in the work area, but also in the musical field.
Elysanij is a musical phenomenon of this digital era. The singer of “Rota” explains that thanks to social networks thousands listened to her performances and that is why she has achieved a place with her album “Believed” in such a short time.
All this movement began on her Facebook page. “[Once I got the Facebook page, and I start recording myself singing, I thought about doing something different, because for me to feel and think; every song in the world is beautiful. What makes it different would be the way of interpreting it, the feeling that the artist puts in. My first reggaeton song turned into an answer and sweet melody along with my guitar playing, was ‘Me contagié’, [song by Anuel AA]. It was a song that touched my soul], ” says the singer.
However, when Elysanij saw the response of her fans, she wanted to present her own songs. The result was an acceptance that she proudly describes as “incredible”. Elysanij lives and breathes music. “[Music for me is everything, the art of knowing how to express and transmit feelings and sensations, music for me is a way of feeling life, it’s union, it’s another language]”, Elysanij affirms.
The musical style of Elysanij is varied, romantic and versatile. As well as its image, which projects its youth, modernity and freshness in the sense of a new dawn of personality day by day. Elysanij explains that like anyone else, she has cried, but her joy is the music which is her life. This is reflected in the theme of her song “Coquito and Banana”.
