#1 Top 100 Hi-Hop/Rap artist in Costa Rica Nakury represents a new wave of rappers in Latin America. Empowering young women through music, break dance and workshops with the belief that art can change life, the MC is taking the genre back to its activist roots.
Nakury combines sublime electro-infused hip hop with social conscience, existential wonder and a call to activism. Inspired to rap by her own experiences, her passion for art began with graffiti at 15 years old; then she combined that with break dancing and rap. Individual and collective empowerment, the relationship with nature, politics and the search for freedom are some of the recurrent themes of her work.
In 2014 the MC published her first mixtape “Rima que Ilumina” (Enlightening Rhyme), nominated for “Best Urban Album” by the association of composers and musical authors in Costa Rica and in 2017 premiered “VIA”, an introspective adventure that reflects life as a constant individual and collective pathway.
Highlighted as one of the 50 unforgettable rap albums in Spanish of 2017 by El Tiempo Colombia, one of Latin America’s oldest and most respected news organizations, “VIA” was produced by Barzo, mixed by Ricardo Bernal and published under the independent record label Lácteo Cósmico. The 16-track record is characterized by the mixture of Rap in Spanish, boom bap beats, breakbeats, and electronic sounds and includes collaborations with artists such as Rebeca Lane, Barzo, Kumary Sawyers, YOGI beatbox, Nacho Páez, and Guadalupe Urbina.
Anticipating her SXSW performance, the Costa Rican MC dropped her upcoming single “Necesario”, available on all digital platforms starting March 8th, in celebration of International Women’s Day. Check out the video below!
