Hauntingly menacing with celestial vocals and thrilling beats, Noita (meaning “witch” in Finnish) casts a spell and enchants listeners with her new Halloween-inspired EP. Interwoven with nocturnal R&B production, the BOO EP opens with the tantalizing and atmospheric “Oxygen” while the following track “Funhouse” echoes a carnival-like tune with a fading backdrop of malicious laughs that accompany the singer’s soothing voice.
Heading deeper down into the songstress’ supernatural odyssey, we find the downtempo “Murky” and synth-driven “Blood On My Pearls.” In its entirety, the project displays Noita’s genre-shifting talent between sensuous R&B and cutting-edge lyrics as she delivers tales of “love, relationship and overall sadness – the idea of wanting to find that perfect person who matches your energy – your number one, your ride or die, your boo. It’s scary.”
Noita’s double life consists of working as a bartender at a former strip club and making moves in Toronto’s underground scene. Her persona as a singer is decidedly anti-Hannah Montana though—just swap out the blonde hair for dark flowy locks and the Pop for brooding R&B. Her music hangs somewhere between that of Banks and Kehlani. Her sultry yet fragile vocals are often mixed with a vocoder and paired with atmospheric, ethereal and bassy productions.
The 22-year-old artist grew up in Playa del Carmen Mexico, relocated to Victoria, BC and dragged herself through a two-year music program —all before she finally set up camp in Toronto where her new life “has been 100% music.”
Noita previously released her debut EP Pink Noise, split into dark chapters, “Thoughts (I), Feelings (II) and Noise (III)” as well as previous single “Zone.” Pink Noise features fuzzy and unclear, beautiful and yet scattered productions from native Toronto producer AODAN. Noita’s vocals flaunt what’s underneath the surface and reveals a whole world of layers and emotion upon closer inspection.
Although Noita’s honed a distinctive hazy sound, she gives her producers room to breathe after handing over the bare-boned beats she creates and writes her music to. In 2017 Noita collaborated with German production duo Konsequence, lending her vocals to their track “Hills” off their Studio City EP. Later that year Noita released a series of singles, “Lie to Me”, “Velvet” and “Oxygen” produced by Dylan King of Glass Face.
Noita recently released her EP ‘Boo’. The halloween inspired ‘Boo’ features tales of love, relationship and overall sadness – the idea of wanting to find that perfect person who matches your energy – your number one, your ride or die, your boo. It’s scary, it’s spooky, it’s Halloween. Noita means witch in finish and directly inspires the overall sound.
