London multi-instrumentalist Rationale has collaborated with fast-rising Swedish-Iranian singer Ayelle for his brand new single ‘Hurts The Most’, released via Best Laid Plans on September 27. He recently sold-out his upcoming headline show at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on November 20.
The heart-grabbing slow-dance is built from a downtempo, elegant, soul-powered sound, and the honeyed duet hints at a ‘90s R&B classic, while Rationale’s sky-high voice swells and soars with a passion that compounds the song’s romantic meditations.
“I’m talking about what affects us the most in relationships,” he says of the track. “Every relationship I’ve ever had, it’s always been the same pattern—you have this wonderful honeymoon period where you want to bunk off work and spend all your time together. Then the other person (usually!) ends up changing. All the words they say from that point stick like glue and you can’t understand how you’ve got from that loving point, which was very clear, to the other place, which is bathed in confrontation and bitterness.”
Rationale is the moniker of Zimbabwe-born Tinashé Fazakerley. He spent the first eight years of his life in a single room with nine relatives and no electricity in the township of Harare in Zimbabwe, before moving to Camberwell, south London, and finding solace in music. “It’s the one and only place in which I can always feel good in,” he says.
Since launching his slow-burning ‘Fast Lane’ in 2015, he’s achieved no less than 5 radio playlist positions for his singles, whilst appearing on Stephen Colbert and Jools Holland, and has written with Katy Perry and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, and had one of his own songs covered by Ellie Goulding. He released his debut album as Rationale in 2017, and since then has independently released a series of tracks and EPs and toured all over Europe. His previous single ‘Say What’s On Your Mind’ marks the start of a new chapter in the Rationale story.
Growing up in Sweden and Spain, Ayelle has been songwriting ever since she learned to write. She continued to persue music as she made the move to London, where she has been granted the PRS Momentum Fund and garnered support from the likes of Billboard, Majestic Casual, Wonderland, Complex and Highsnobiety. Drawing inspiration from her own life experiences, her writing explores a range of topics such as self-worth, power dynamics in relationships and challenging the status quo. Her latest EP ‘Slow Clap’ was picked as Jamz Supernova’s #1 EP on BBC 1Xtra.
