Rico Nasty was born Maria Kelly on May 7, 1997, in New York. She was raised in Maryland and was exposed to rap music at a very young age, as her father was a rapper. She quickly picked up the nuances of rapping from her father. She grew up listening to artists like Bob Marley, Beyonce, JAY-Z, Nas, and Jill Scott. She eventually developed interest in music, but never thought about making a career out of it.
Whe she was 11 years old, she moved to a new neighborhood along with her mother and had to attend a boarding school in Baltimore. When she was 13, her parents separated, which had a negative impact on her life. By the age 15, she had begun to make music. She also started writing poetry and songs to get rid of boredom. She even released her maiden mixtape titled ‘Summers Eve’ when she was still a student.
However, she did not take her writing and rapping skills seriously, until she was pregnant with her child. Having lost her boyfriend Brandon to asthma, Rico quickly realized that music could be her savior and a platform on which she could raise her child without any hassles. At the age of 18, she gave birth to her son Cameron, after which she decided to pursue music as a career.
