Tolliver’s life is full of contradictions. The son of a Baptist pastor, while he certainly takes influence from the gospel singing of his youth, his lyrical subjects are certainly more sinful – paying homage to late-night LA parties and anonymous sex.
Taken from his new EP ‘RITES’, debut single ‘I Gotchu’ has had the remix treatment from Saturday, Monday – a Swedish producer who’s worked with the likes of Hayley Kiyoko and Steve Angello and been hyped by Pitchfork, The Fader, The Guardian, Zane Lowe and Diplo.
With the original alt-RnB tune documenting relationship breakdowns an reconciliations, the remix retains it’s message, with the producer telling us “what I love about the original track is that it is very ’visual’ and that the appeal lies in its form. So I knew that I didn’t want to just loop up a section and put some drums on it but rather try to expand the theme further having Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’ and Berry Jenkins’ film ’Moonlight’ in mind.”
